How often should you change your towels?

We’re ready to talk all things towels with you! Maintaining good towel hygiene is crucial. And even though some people diligently wash their towels after every use, others might struggle to remember the last time they threw theirs into the wash! This being said, the question “how often should you wash your towels?” is raised, and this is what experts have to say on the matter.

So, How Often?

When it comes to bath towels, they need to be washed after you’ve used them 3 to 4 times, however, the absolute longest you should go without washing your towels is a week. Hand towels need to be washed more frequently though, as they generally remain a bit damp if you use them multiple times throughout the day. When it comes to your gym towels, you should wash them after every use because not only are they covered in sweat, but  they also come into contact with airborne bacteria.

If your towel is starting to smell, the smell is most likely due to the organisms starting to grow out. So it’s best to let your towels dry completely before reusing them, otherwise, the moisture will allow microorganisms to grow. And if this happens, you’ll just be bringing those microorganisms back onto your freshly washed hands and body.

How Should You Wash Your Towels?

By now you should know that if you want your towels to stay clean, fluffy, and fresher for longer, you should probably give them a good wash! 5 of our best towel-washing tips are:

  1. Wash your towel at a relatively high temperature, say 40 degrees Celsius so that they stay fresh and feel soft for longer. But if you’re looking to get rid of germs and bacteria, then a 60-degree Celsius wash is better.

  2. Add the correct amount of detergent. Using excess detergent builds up soapy residue that can make towels less absorbent and stiff.

  3. If you’d like to use fabric softener, use the bare minimum because it can reduce the absorbency of towels.

  4. A machine that’s too full means that not all your towels will get as much detergent, water, or movement to get clean. So don’t overload your washing machine with towels.

  5. Tumble dry your towels – they’ll stay fluffy and softer for longer. Just remember to give them a good shake before you place them into the dryer.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, you probably won’t experience any huge ill effects from using your towels over again for several days or even weeks.
