There are few things that feel as instinctively right as wrapping a newborn in something warm and impossibly soft. It’s one of the first gestures a parent makes, holding their baby close, keeping them safe, and a good baby blanket is right at the centre of that. Whether you’re a new parent figuring out what you actually need, or someone shopping for a baby shower gift that won’t end up at the back of a cupboard, blankets are one of those things that always get used. Repeatedly. And gratefully.
At Sesli, we’ve been making blankets for South African families for over 25 years. Baby blankets are a small but important part of that, and here’s what we’ve learned about choosing the right one.
What Makes a Good Baby Blanket?
Not all blankets are created equal, and when it comes to a newborn, a few things matter more than they would for an adult:
- Softness first. A baby’s skin is sensitive, and rough or scratchy fabrics aren’t an option. Look for blankets that feel genuinely soft against the back of your hand.
- The right size. A mini blanket or infant-sized blanket (around 100 x 120cm) works well for cot use and as a swaddle. Larger blankets come into their own as babies grow into toddlers and kids.
- Easy to wash. This is non-negotiable. Baby blankets get used constantly and need to be machine washable. A cold, gentle cycle should do the job without affecting the fabric.
- Durability. A well-made blanket will see a baby through multiple stages and possibly even be passed on to siblings.
The Many Lives of an Infant Blanket
One of the reasons infant blankets make such practical baby shower gifts is how many jobs they do. A good baby blanket doesn’t have one use, it has about six:
- Swaddling. Wrapping a newborn snugly mimics the feeling of the womb and can help settle an unsettled baby. A lightweight, pliable blanket works best here.
- Cot layering. Used as a top layer in the cot during cooler months, adding warmth without bulk. Always follow safe sleep guidelines, blankets in cots should be used carefully and in line with current advice for your baby’s age and stage.
- Pram cover. Pulled up over the pram on a breezy day, a soft baby blanket keeps the cold out without overheating.
- Tummy time mat. Laid flat on the floor for those supervised awake periods.
- Nursing cover. Soft, familiar-smelling, and exactly the right size.
Swaddling Blankets vs. Kids Blankets: What’s the Difference?
Newborn Swaddle Blankets
Newborn swaddle blankets tend to be lighter and more flexible; they need to wrap snugly without restriction. Muslin and lightweight fleece work particularly well for very young babies because they’re breathable and don’t add too much warmth.
Kids Blankets
As babies become toddlers and toddlers become kids, their blanket needs shift. Kids blankets can be heavier, warmer, and more expressive; this is where fun patterns and colours come in. The Sesli baby faux mink range in heart and geometric patterns is exactly this kind of blanket: warm, soft, visually appealing, and built to survive the chaos of childhood.
The Sesli Babies & Kids Blanket Range
Sesli’s baby and kids collection covers the full range of what a growing child needs:
- Sesli Embossed Baby Blanket: 100 x 120cm, 100% polyester, available in three calm, nursery-friendly colours. Soft, machine washable, and sized perfectly for cot use or swaddling. Makes a beautiful baby shower gift, especially in the neutral tones.
- Colourful Mink Baby Blankets: A plush, tactile option that adds warmth and a pop of colour to any nursery
- Baby Faux Mink Blankets (Heart Pattern): Soft, cosy, and the kind of thing a child will want to drag everywhere with them
- Baby Faux Mink Blankets (Patterned): Same quality, different look, geometric patterns that work equally well for boys and girls
All are machine washable on a cold gentle cycle. Do not iron, bleach, or tumble-dry.
A Word on Safe Sleep
Blankets are wonderful, but it’s worth a gentle reminder: current safe sleep guidance recommends that loose blankets be kept out of the sleep space for very young infants. As babies grow and develop, blanket use in the cot becomes safer, but always check with your paediatrician or healthcare provider if you’re unsure what’s right for your child’s age and stage.
